August/September 2006

Committee Chair’s Corner

Marsha Kofman, Committee Chair, rdhetal@yahoo.com, 429-0794

Summer is the best time for family outings and fun.  Hope you have made time for plenty of both.

With the memories of summer camp still vivid in our minds, we are starting to gear up for the upcoming scouting year.  The calendar of events has been planned and it looks to be an exciting year with some new events and destinations.

Although the scouting program is lead by the Scouts, it does require the active support of the adults. Many thanks go to the adults that worked the Midway for the July 4: Mike Marston, Ken Sanborn, Christy Lambert, Louis Rothenberg, and Tim Retelle. Many thanks to all that came to have fun and support the Dunk Booth.

The District sponsored Popcorn sale began in August this year. More information and order forms can be obtained from Mr. Golemo. District is providing additional time for early popcorn sales.   This fundraiser provides the scouts with great earning potential for their scout accounts to help them pay for scouting events, dues, summer camp and scouting and camping gear.   I would like to thank Bob Golemo for volunteering to manage the Popcorn Sale this year. Many thanks.

I encourage each and every adult to become involved in the Scouting program to support your son and the other scouts.  As much as we try to get to know each of you and your areas of specialties, we ask you to come forward if you can provide some assistance with the operation of the troop, a Merit Badge, or have resources that the scouts could benefit from.  What you will get back in return will be amazing.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and see you at the first Troop Meeting on September 11th.

Remember to bring a friend to any meeting, who might be interested in joining Scouts.

Scoutmaster’s Minute

Mike Marston, Scoutmaster, marstonm@adelphia.net, 424-0017

Troop 401,

Welcome back to scouting.  I hope everyone does not join me in the feeling that this was the summer that wasn't, it just passed me by.

Anyway, we are back at it.  We have a full calendar again this year and again, need everyone's help in pulling it all together.  Keep an eye on the calendar on our web site and your email for information about upcoming events and meetings.  If you have been keeping that one big great idea for the best event ever to yourself, it is not too late to let us know about it!

Summer camp went off without a hitch.  We had 15 boys for the week.  The rain did manage to sneak in for the Steak Tips, making it quite cozy cooking and eating under the tarp.  We had a record 12 people successfully complete the mile swim. GREAT JOB!  Thank you to the adult leaders for the week, Bob Golemo, Rosemary Dougherty, and Ken Sanborn.  Mr. Golemo has volunteered to be the Camp Coordinator for the coming year.

The highlight of the summer was Trent Mithoefer's Eagle Court of Honor in the beginning of August.  This was a nice ceremony that involved all of Trent's family including his fellow Eagle relatives, his two brothers and his grandfather.  Congratulations Trent!

The month of September will be mostly dedicated to putting the fall version of the Spring Camporee together.  We need to rebuild our stations, plan meals, and prepare for the concessions (this function needs to be primarily parents).  This event will be held at Anheuser Bush, but this time on the event fields and "common" areas.  We are confident that there is no poison ivy on these event fields.  Event dates are Sept. 29-Oct. 1.

Please contact me any time with comments, questions, or concerns.  You can email me at marstonm@adelphia.net or reach me via Cell phone at 603-494-9023.

Announcements

Committee Meetings

The Troop 401 Committee meets on the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting will be on September 14 at 7 PM, at St. James Church. All parents are encouraged to attend and participate.  Thank you to those who attended the August 17th meeting.   See you at the next meeting.

Camporee

All scouts and parents are needed to help with this re-scheduled spring event at Anheuser- Busch on Sept 29-Oct 1.  Emergency Preparation merit badge and awareness is the theme.  Permission slips are out and food money is to be collected soon.   Mrs. Rich and Mr. Golemo will be running the troop camping portion of this event.   We are considering having the troop supply lunches and breakfast with patrols cook their own dinners, this to be discussed at the next troop meeting.  It is expected that it will cost $12 for food for the entire weekend.  Call Mrs. Rich for further details.

Roundtable

Roundtable is open to any person or parent interested in scouting.   The boy scout session on Sept. 20 from  7- 9 pm at the LDS Church on Concord St in Nashua will be a presentation on a Colorado backpacking trip with a focus and info on how to get your troop into backpacking gradually.  Included will be spots where you can take younger boys (and leaders) for a gentle trip, but provide a higher adventure for older scouts as well.

Merit Badges

Boys Second Class and over who are interested in working on First Aid Merit Badge should contact Mrs. Rich at 880-8222.   She is also a counselor for the reading and scholarship merit badges if you are interested.

Troop committee training will be on Oct 7 with New Leader Essentials starting at 9 am, at First Church in Nashua.    Assistant Scoutmaster training will not be held until January, but you may go to the new leader essentials portion on Oct 7 from 9-11 am and then sleep in later on your January training date.

Advancements

Ed Tucker, Advancement Chair

edthepiper@verizon.net, 429-1012

Scouts, as you finish the merit badge work that you started over the summer, remember to have your merit badge counselor sign the card, have the Scoutmaster or any of the Assistant Scoutmasters sign the blue card and then turn it in to Mr. Tucker so that you can receive your merit badge at the next Court of Honor in October.

Service Projects

For most ranks, service projects are necessary for advancement.  This fall there will be many opportunities for you to participate in various projects such as Adopt-A-Road, Parsonage clean-up, pie bakes at Thanksgiving and Christmas, Scouting for Food, and the St. Joseph’s Box Wrap.   Service projects are important, not only for rank, but it is our civic duty to help those around us who need help.

Fundraising

Popcorn season has come once again.  Scouts, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to earn credits for your scout account.  Order forms and additional information can be obtained from Mr. Golemo.
