August 2007 News

Committee Chair’s Corner

Marsha Kofman, Committee Chair, rdhetal@yahoo.com, 429-0794

It may have been summer vacation, but Troop 401 scouts were busy!  There were Scouts marching in the 7/4 parade and working the Dunk Booth, (until it rained). Scouts attending week 3 at Hidden Valley Scout Camp, then week 6 at Camp Bell! There were also a few scouts that attended Hidden Valley as Provisional Campers since they had so much fun the first week (or had conflicts with the Troop weeks!)  In between all of that, there were Merit Badge meetings happening with various counselors to complete and document the requirements finished during the school hiatus. We also had a Community Service project to perform Grounds Maintenance at Camp Whip O Will, the Hidden Gem for camping right here is Merrimack!

Many thanks to the adults, who gave up their precious family and vacation time to spend with the scouts and their activities. Attending HVSR was Bob Golemo, Ken Sanborn, Wayne Landry and Mike Volante. Camp Bell leaders were Mike Becker, Daniel Becker and Mike Dougherty. The Mowing and Trimming crew at Whip O Will, Dave Milton, Dean Killkelley, Tim Retelle,  Kevin and Kelly Seeley, Ginny Prive and Marsha Kofman. The Dunk Booth; Mike Volante, Helen Yates, Tim Retelle, Kevin Seeley, and Rick and Paula Allard. The 7/4 Parade of Louis Rothenberg, Tim Retelle and Ken Sanborn.   I hope I didn’t leave anyone out. Many thank you’s for supporting this “Boy Run” organization.

The upcoming Scouting calendar the boys have planned looks to be very exciting. In order for these programs to happen for the boys, there must be ADULT leadership. Without adults to plan and oversee the event, they will be cancelled. If you haven’t joined in the fun yet, ask how you can become involved. Speak to me at a meeting, email, or a phone call. We look forward to having you join us on a very rewarding adventure with your scouts. Remember, when the program calendar comes around to you, please be sure to sign up for some event. Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated.

Fundraising

Double Fundraiser

Fishercats vs. Portland Seadogs, Saturday, August 25, at 7:05PM

Did you finish selling your tickets and turn your money into Mrs. Kofman? Now, your parents can help you earn more money for your scout account and also for the Troop. How???? By working the First Base Concession Stand (Right by the tickets we sold!) at the Fishercats Stadium!  For each parent that works, with a scout in the Troop, they can earn up to $20.00 for their son’s scout account. The adults without scouts in the Troop, can earn up to the same amount for their own scout accounts. Remember, this money can help pay for uniforms, events or even Summer Camp. We still have a number of openings available. Please call or email, Marsha Kofman, ASAP, 429-0794, to sign up to work. A great time is always had by all of the adults that work.

Popcorn Sales

For all those scouts selling popcorn this year, please bring your popcorn order sheets AND payment to the Ice Cream Social on August 27th. This is a very important fundraiser for the troop and for the scout accounts. The troop receives up to 6% of the sales and individual scout accounts receive 30% of the sales.

Wasserman Park Tenderfoot Challenge

A special two-night campout for the newest Scouters was held at Wasserman park in June.   Jack Mulrey and James Rothenburg formed two patrols of younglings in order to help the newest Scouters to complete most of their Tenderfoot requirements. Holden Lambert assisted while Matthew Beck, Sid Soundararajan, Kyle Sanborn, Tristin Loukides, Brandon Dougherty, Robert Killkelley, Logan Seeley and Jackson Volante learned, practiced and competed in knots, cooking skills (yummy dutch oven delights), first aid, flag ceremonies, safe hiking and camping skills.  Both nights saw lots of fun fireside skits and the weather could not have been better. Thanks to Mr. Sanborn and Mr. Seeley for taking the time to be the adult leaders.

Pawtuckaway Canoe Trip

Troop 401 took over the group sites near Pawtuckaway Lake for a two-night camping and canoe trip. Three patrols were formed by location in the campsite to camp and cook as separate teams.  The Dutch oven cook-off was very tasty for the judges and the final winner was the Jambalaya.  The canoe trip on the lake was enhanced by the 25 knot winds giving the scouts a real chance to hone their techniques.  Jack Mulrey and James Rothenburg gave an excellent training session while Joel Yates, Ryan Sanborn, Max Landry, Sean Ianni, Ricky Allard, Logan Seeley, Holden Lambert, Mike Dougherty, Matthew Becker, Robert Killkelly, Sam Prive, Tom Allard, Kyle Sanborn, Brenden Adams and Brandon Dougherty became true canoeists.  Much appreciation to the adult leaders Mr. Sanborn, Mr. Landry, Mr. Seeley, Mr Volante, Mr. Dougherty and Mr. Dan Becker for leading this fun event.

On Being a Scout….

Life is full of choices, choices that can be difficult to make depending on the surroundings, circumstances or people in the area.

One of the guidelines that I have always used when it came time to decide between doing something wrong or right is this:

“Imagine your mother on one side of you and God on the other. If you would still do it with both of them there, then it is probably the right thing to do.”
