Committee Chair’s Corner

Marsha Kofman, Committee Chair, rdhetal@yahoo.com, 429-0794

The cold weather is supposed to be starting in true New England style. Warm one day, cold the next. We are still waiting, and glad to do so!! But with this pending change, we know the HOLIDAYS are charging at us. The season of FAMILY gatherings and the season of SHARING and GIVING are just ahead.

Part of the Scouting program is Community Service. The scouts are reminded as a scout, to “Do a Good Turn Daily,” but this becomes even more evident during the HOLIDAY season. Programs like “Scouting for Food” to assist all of the Food Pantry’s and Soup Kitchen’s across the state, takes place during this season. Troop 401 and Pack 401 directly support The St. James Community Food Pantry. Bag drop off needs to be done by 11/10. Food bag pickup is Saturday 11/17. We need EVERYONE’S help. Parent’s included! Listen for announcements. The Parsonage Cleanup will also take place right after the Food pick up.

The Troop will run and donate pies to the Holiday Pie Bakes, to support the St. James Food Pantry. Thanksgiving Pies will be baked on Monday 11/19 at 6 PM. Mrs. Retelle will be making announcements for this event. The Troop assists the Town of Merrimack kick off the Christmas season with the Candlelight Walk by passing out candles on Saturday 11/24 at 6 PM. The Town Holiday Parade is scheduled for 12/2; Mr. Retelle will coordinate. The “Box Wrap” at St. Josephs Hospital will be overseen by Mr. Golemo on 12/17 at 4 PM. The Holiday Pie Bake is also on 12/17 at 6 PM.  Mrs. Rich will oversee this event.

These are just a few of the projects that help demonstrate to the Scouts how to SHARE, contribute and GIVE to our Community. This is important to the Scouts and their contribution to their Community. Please support them with this part of their requirements for rank advancement. Please mark the FAMILY calendar with these events as a reminder.

The scouts alone cannot take these projects on. The support of the leaders and the example of their parents and FAMILIES play a major role with their contributions to the community. Thank you for your support. It is through that support that we all make our community and world a better place for our scouts and FAMILIES.

To all of those that have turned in their green forms stating that you have read and reviewed the Policies and Procedure, and the Troop and Daniel Webster Council has received permission from your parents for your pictures to be taken for the Troop web page or Public newspapers, THANK YOU.  To those scouts that have not turned the paperwork in, please get those forms to me ASAP.

Thank you,

Dues and Registration Fees

Are you current? As stated in the Troop 401 Policies and Procedures, dues and registration fees must be paid to date in order to participate in an event and/or campout. Please make sure you are up-to-date!

Troop Committee Meetings

All parents and leaders are encouraged to attend monthly meetings. They are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month, at 7 PM.  The meeting takes place at St. James Church.

Troop 401 Hiking Club

The Club’s next hike will be November 10th.  The Sheldrick Forest Preserve, in the Wilton area, will be a fairly easy hike. The forest is extraordinary. Woodlands of this age, size and diversity have disappeared from virtually all of southern New Hampshire. The Club will meet at 11 a.m. at the Black Forest Café parking lot which is slightly north of the Meeting Place Plaza (just off the Amherst Exit on 101). Contact Mr. Seeley if you need a map to the café – 424-0734.

The December hike as not yet been determined but listen for details in November.

District Roundtable

Scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month, the meetings take place at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Nashua, next to Greeley Park at 7 PM.

All adult leaders are encouraged to attend this valuable training. Parents are also welcome to attend these meetings to learn more about the scouting program.

Upcoming Topics are:

November – Cold weather preparedness training.

December -   Webelos Transition

January - Adult Leadership Advancement and                                   Recognition

Fundraising

Wreath Sales

The troop will be selling Christmas wreaths again this year. The popular greenery comes from Wilson Farms, in Lexington, MA. Order forms were distributed on 10/8.  This is a great way to earn money for the Troop, and your Scout Accounts so you can pay for your own Scouting events. Remember…..“A Scout is Thrifty.”

Thank you to Mrs. Demers for running this event again this year. Call her with questions or to get forms - 424-7256.

Troop Participation

Parents and other adults met on October 25th to discuss fund-raising possibilities. The troop needs to replace and improve equipment as well as ensure the troop can pay for rentals, etc for upcoming events. Several great ideas came out of the meeting. Stay-tuned for additional announcements in November on the fun and exciting ways the Troop plans to meet the needs of the Troop.

Grocery Receipts

The first exciting opportunity to come out of the parent fund-raising meeting was a program offered by:

Everybody has to shop for food, right? What if food shopping could also help Troop 401?? Shaw’s Receipt Rewards Program will do exactly that!

All you have to do is save your Shaw’s receipts, turn them into Mrs. Prive who is overseeing this important program and she will submit them to Shaw’s. Troop 401 will receive 1% of the dollar amount on all the receipts turned in.

There are two important points to remember:

  • Receipts can come from any Shaw’s in the country….so collect them from Grandma and Aunt Sally.
  • You can gather receipts as far back as January 2007.

There are some things that will be excluded from the 1% payout but we can turn in as many as possible….so start collecting, bring them to the Monday troop meetings and listen for how to turn them in!

Popcorn Sales

Popcorn sales are officially done!! Mrs. Beck has tallied the number and is very happy to announce that the Troop has sold over $7,000!

30% of the profits will go to the Boy’s Scout Account and 2 – 6% will go to Troop 401.

The following Scouts participated in the event:

Brendan, Ricky, Tommy, Matthew, Nathan,  Tyler, Sean, Robert, Holden, Max, Sam, Eric, Kyle, Ryan, Logan, Sid, Matt, Jake, Jackson and Joel.

The December Newsletter will highlight the top three selling Scouts.

THANK YOU to Mrs. Beck for overseeing this successful event!

Past Events

Hike #3 – Mount Cardigan (3.2 miles, 1200 ft)

Troop 401’s Hiking Club takes on its first mountain peak!  The hikers enjoyed a clear, early fall day on September 29th with just enough wind to blow any unattached scouts all the way to Maine.  The Club’s loyal sherpas (Birk and Bella) carried the water. The hikers that were treated to a spectacular view were Matthew, Logan, Jackson, Alex (Cubbie), Mr. and Mrs. Volante and Mr. and Mrs. Seeley.

NH Jamboree 2007

On October 5-7 this once-in-four year event saw lovely weather and lots of fun until an inch of rain on the last night added some excitement to the fireworks show.  Tyler excelled as the Jamboree Patrol Leader while James, Joel, Matthew, Brendan, Logan, Holden, Jackson and Max represented Troop 401 with pride. We give a big thank-you to the adults: Mr. Volante, Mr. Seeley, Mr. Golemo and Mr. Landry for their support.

Adopt-a-Road

A big HURRAY for Troop 401’s Trash Mashers! Matthew, Holden, Jake and Robert braved the elements and cleaned up a needy Merrimack road on October 12th. If you missed this one, don’t worry, there is another trash mashing event in May….see you then!

Hike #4 – Corn Maze (1 mile)

On October 13th Coppal House Farm offered up a beautiful fall day for the Troop Hiking Club and a number of Pack members led by Mrs. Volante. Clues led the Troop like rodents through an aMAZing experience.  Robert, Logan, Jackson, Kyle, Jake and Tommy made quick work of the puzzle while the adults Mr. Sanborn, The Seeleys, Killkellys, Therrians and Allards struggled to find the “cheese” at the end of the maze.

Hike #5 – Mount Monadnock (5.2 miles, 1500 ft)

The Hiking Club’s next hike and second mountain was the famous Mount Monadnock.  The Club took the Old Toll Road Trail to the site of the Halfway House Hotel and set off for the peak on yet another perfect fall day.  Once we broke out of the trees the boys found their own paths up the remaining 500ft in elevation to the top of the granite domed peak.  Tommy, Ricky, Matthew, Robert, Logan, Max, Jackson and (of course Alex) crawled like ants over the top of this popular mountain.  The Volantes, Seeleys, Mrs. Allard and Mr. KillKelly made it to the top and ultimately the bottom despite their advanced age and creaking knees.

On Being a Scout….

“I think the character that you learn in Scouting – working together, being honest with each other, being close knit…and depending on one another, on our camping trips and doing things – all these build character in a young man that he takes with him into adulthood and makes him a much better citizen. I think Scouting is one of the best youth organizations that we have in this country”.
