Summer is knocking on our doors, (if the rain ever goes away), indicating another year has come to a close. I would like to thank all of the Leaders and parents who gave of their time to help make this program exist. Without you, the events would not have occurred.
Troop 401 runs a year round scouting program. Although we do not have weekly meetings, the scouts can have regular Patrol Meetings.
The Troop also has events scheduled for the summer:
Whip O Will maintenance from 7/1 to 7/14
Summer Camp is 7/12 to the 18th
Lake Umbagog Canoe Trip is 8/6 to 8/9
The Ice Cream Social is scheduled for 8/31
Stay tuned as there may be other stuff that comes up as well!! Everyone is encouraged to participate in these events. Your help is always welcome with any of these events. Please contact me to see where your assistance could be best utilized.
Have a great summer and see you at the next event.

WHAT IS GOING ON? WHAT DID YOU SAY? WHAT AM I SUPPOSE TO DO? HOW CAN I HELP? AND MORE!
HELP WANTED (NEEDED)!!!!
The Troop is in need of a Popcorn Coordinator!
After 2 years of dedicated service, Erica Beck will not be able to be the Troop Popcorn Kernel this year.
This is a great opportunity for the scouts to raise money for their scouting events throughout the year. If the troop doesn’t have a Popcorn Coordinator, none of the boys will be able to participate in this fundraising event. So please, help with this event.
The Troop is in need of a Fundraiser Coordinator.
This person will oversee our fundraisers and work with the individuals who run each event. They will also look for new and different opportunities.
Contact Marsha Kofman for either of these positions. rdhetal@yahoo.com, 429-0794
WHIP O WILL (COMMUNITY SERVICE)
The Troop is scheduled to perform our Annual Community Service at Whip O Will from 7/1 to 7/14. With all of the rain, the fields have had lots of water to do lots of growing. We need to cut the grass, weed whack, and stack the wood in the axe yard, pick up trash and tidy up the fire pits. This is an area we have used throughout the year and we need to help maintain it. The Troop Committee decided to have a designated day of Saturday, 7/11. This is just before camp so our work will be done before you go off to play!! Just remember, the gate road is closed until further notice to vehicles. PLEASE let me know ASAP that you will be there. Although the adults will be operating the equipment, there are plenty of things for scouts to be doing. Remember, this is Community Service for a camp ground right in our own Town!!!
Thank you in advance for your time and work to help maintain this local and convenient location.
COMMITTEE MEETING
The Summer Committee Meeting is scheduled for July 30, at 7PM at St. James Church. This is accommodating committee member’s vacation schedules. All parents and leaders are encouraged to attend the Committee Meetings to share your ideas.
SUMMER E-MAILS
Occasionally the Troop is presented with an opportunity to attend an event or gifted tickets to shows. The fastest way to get the word out is through the Troop email lists. Please check your email on a regular basis even during the summer to participate in those opportunities. Please let me know if you don’t receive any emails or change your address.
SHAW’S RECEIPTS
You no longer need to save your receipts. Don’t forget to enroll your “Rewards Card” from Shaw’s for their newest rewards program so Troop 401 is receiving additional fundraising money. Unfortunately, because of the restrictions they have on this new program we will only be eligible for purchases made on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. Although these are not most people primary shopping days please remember to use your rewards card whenever you make purchases at Shaw’s.
Since February when the program started we have not earned any rewards money from Shaw’s so please help us out and be sure to sign up your rewards card and scan it especially on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. If you have any questions about the program please contact Deeanne Berube.
SUMMER MERIT BADGE WORK
I would encourage all of the scouts to work in Merit Badges this summer. School work and activities are not occupying all of your time. Projects can be done and adventures can be planned to meet the requirements of many Merit Badges. See the Scoutmaster or myself for a current list of Merit Badge Counselors so that you can get started. Don’t forget to get your Blue Cards and talk with the counselor before you start the Merit Badge
NORTHWOOD MEADOWS CAMPOUT.
The scouts camped at the Wah-Tut-Ca Scout Reservation in Northwood, NH on April 17-19. We arrived Friday night in the dark and setup camp. Saturday morning was still a little cloudy and cool but it turned into a nice day for a hike. The troop went for a 5 mile hike in the Northwood Meadows state park and the light rain held off until our dinners were done and the dishes cleaned up. Sunday morning dawned to a beautiful morning for us to come home.

SUMMER RECIPE(c/o Mr. Milton):
DRESSED UP BURGERS
Tired of the old hamburger on the grill? Well how about stepping back and taking a look at this backyard and campsite favorite. We have all heard of stuff crust pizza; let’s do the same thing with a burger!
Take a 1/3 pound of hamburger and split it in two, flatten them out and place a piece of your favorite cheese on top of one. Then take the second hamburger and put it on top them squeeze the edges to seal in the cheese. Grill and enjoy!
You can try blue cheese, cheddar, Swiss, any cheese will do. If you like onions and peppers try them in the middle also or just mix them in the meat and grill. You can also mix BBQ sauce to your burgers to make that BBQ flavor through the whole burger. Add some BBQ rub to give it that southwestern flavor. Anything goes! Even step away from beef, try Elk, Wild Boar, or Buffalo (available at Franks Place). Bare Bones has other meats as well. The summers here! Branch out and try different burgers and start grilling.
*As a side note if you find your meat is dry when you grill it, turn down the heat when you grill it. You should be around 400 degrees. When you are done let the meat rest to re-distribute the juices back though the meat and it will turn out moist.
TAUT LINE (c/o Mr. Milton):
This is one knot you will always use when camping. I don’t think I have ever gone camping and not tied this knot. Used for tying down your tent to a tent peg. Use it to tie a line onto a tarp or rain fly and then tighten it. When the line stretches you can just slid the knot up to tighten.
Step 1
Wrap your rope around a pole , branch, tend peg,...), cross the shorter end underneath the long running length of the rope, and drop it down through the hole between where the rope crosses and the pole, as if you are going to tie a half hitch.
Step 2
Bring the rope around and drop it through again (this is the "extra turn").
Step 3
Bring the end of the rope to the front of the two loops you just made, and tie another half-hitch (just like the first one in step one). Pull to tighten.
Step 4
You can now slide the knot along the main length of rope to tighten or loosen the line, as needed.
Please feel free to contact me anytime with words of wisdom, creative ideas, pictures etc. that you would like to add to the scout newsletter!
